Woodland Wildlife: Quiet Lives of New England’s Forests

New England wildlife photography has always been rooted in quiet observation—patient moments spent exploring forests, wetlands, rivers, and hidden corners of the region. Much of my work begins close to home, moving through the protected habitats of the Wyndham Land Trust, the deep hemlock ravines of Mashamoquet Brook State Park, the winding trails of Bigelow Hollow and Nipmuck State Forest, and the rich woodlands of James L. Goodwin State Forest. I spend countless hours along the Quinebaug River, West Thompson Dam, and Roseland Lake within the Little River Watershed, as well as many other preserves, parks, and sanctuaries throughout northeastern Connecticut.

These places offer intimate encounters with the region’s woodland residents—white‑tailed deer slipping between pines, red foxes weaving through underbrush, mink and beavers working the riverbanks, or great blue herons standing quietly in the shallows, loons echoing across the fog, bald eagles and osprey sweeping over the lakes, and mallards slipping through the still coves of Lake Umbagog. My photography also extends north to the boreal forests of Lake Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge in New Hampshire and Maine, where moose, black bear, loons, and other northern species thrive in vast, untouched habitat.

This collection celebrates the personality and presence of these woodland animals—mammals, birds, and small creatures whose lives are woven into the forests of New England. Each photograph reflects patience, natural light, and the slow rhythm of the woods, inviting viewers to experience the quiet beauty of wildlife that often goes unseen. For those interested in learning more about the native species that inhabit these landscapes, the Mass Audubon Wildlife & Habitats resource provides an excellent overview of New England’s wildlife and the ecosystems they depend on.

Thank you for visiting my Woodland Wildlife Gallery. New work is always being added, and this collection continues to grow and evolve. I appreciate you taking the time to explore these moments in nature.
